Zzoomm, the Full Fibre broadband provider, has achieved 10% take-up of their Full Fibre broadband in Penistone (Yorkshire) since launching in March 2024; continuing to prove adept at winning market share in the areas it operates.

With a strong presence in the surrounding county of Yorkshire, homes and businesses in Penistone can now access a Full Fibre gigabit network capable of 10Gbps connections.

Penistone is now one of the best-connected market towns in the UK; Zzoomm will revolutionise life for households and businesses across the town. Access to Full Fibre has never been so important; levelling up connectivity in many towns across Yorkshire and the nation, previously ignored by the major broadband network providers.

Chris Collinson, Chief Commercial Officer at Zzoomm commented:

“We’re excited to see such a significant number of Penistone residents joining Zzoomm in just the few weeks since completing the majority of the build. It’s evident that the residents and businesses of Penistone recognize the advantages of gigafast broadband and are embracing our investment in cutting-edge Full Fibre technology.”

We’re thrilled to foster innovation by providing access to our gigafast Full Fibre network to homes and businesses in Penistone. At Zzoomm, we firmly believe in ensuring that everyone has access to dependable, forward-thinking broadband services.”

Watch Olly talk about his Zzoomm customer experience and why upgrading to Full Fibre broadband was the best thing he’s done this year.

If you’re like Olly, you can emphasise with the frustrations of living in a smart home and the devices not working properly. You invest in a 4K TV, your kids are gaming fanatics, you’ve ring doors bells, Alexa’s, Philips Hue lighting kitted throughout the home and an office set up for those work from home days and yet surprisingly, it’s your broadband connection that’s holding you back from experiencing all these devices work in harmony.

Olly’s reason for switching to Full Fibre broadband was because he needed faster upload speeds.

Upload speeds are crucial for Olly (and are more important for homes using the internet now more than ever!) as it affects his ability to video call without buffering, let the kids game without lagging (and moaning), and using security cameras and other devices that need to share data with cloud services.

Historically, the kids were yelling Dad, your internets rubbish! all of that has stopped now the ping is good

Full Fibre provides a more robust, reliable connection than traditional copper wires that providers on Openreach reach use. The more connected devices in our homes, the higher our need is to receive a connection that can handle the demand of technology.

I knew that I wasn’t going to get a decent broadband connection from any of the traditional providers “ I needed something fresh and new

If you’re excited by the connected home, just remember you’ll need an internet connection that’s capable of providing future ready speeds and reliability right now. When you’re looking for the ultimate in connectivity and compromise on quality isn’t an option, then your home needs Zzoomm Full Fibre.

While our younger generations have grown up with social media since day 1 that doesn’t mean they know how to browse the internet safely.

So, to mark this years’ Safer Internet Day, we’ve gone around the entire Zzoomm team and found their three top tips to help your family enjoy a safer browsing experience.

Safe browsing
The internet is a digital Wild West, full of wonderful, educational, and exciting interests, but it also has a darker side not safe for children. To keep your kids on the right side of the fence and provide a safe browsing experience, check out InternetMatters.org.

Not only can you find out the parental controls available on your phones, tablets, and computers, but it also breaks down its advice by the age of your kids, helping you keep their online experience in line with their friends, so they don’t miss out on any of the social aspects of the internet that their friends are enjoying.

Limit screen time
We’re not trying to be alarmist, but just like alcohol, tobacco and drugs, if not managed carefully, screen time can become an addiction that can damage the health of your family and their relationships with others.

Settings expectations for how long kids can spend on their phone, as well as no-phone times (like during meals or family time) helps break the reliance on technology that kids can experience.

Here’s some great advice for iPhone users, and Android users, on how to set limits on screen time and enhance digital wellbeing while using portable devices.

Social Media
To minimise the potential for bullying and harassment, regularly engage with your family about what they do and who they speak with on their favourite platforms, sharing their enjoyment and guiding them to safe spaces. Should the worst happen, and they do find any negative experiences; they will hopefully then be more comfortable sharing those issues, instead of holding those problems inside.

YoungMinds.org has a lot of great advice for parents needing guidance on how best to address the impact of social media on young people’s mental health.

All told, we love the potential for good that the internet holds. It brings us all closer together and can act as the catalyst for social change when used respectfully. But it’s also a significant danger to the health of our future generations. By helping our families use the internet in a safer way, we can all use the internet to inspire change for the better.

For further actionable advice and support, as well as the links above, we’d also recommend the NSPCC’s online training course that helps keep children safe online.

Sunday 28th January is National Privacy Day, and in the spirit of keeping our customers information to themselves,

we wanted to share a few easy tips that help you take control of your data:

1. Make your passwords secure

Firstly, don’t use anything simple like Password or your birth date. Use a mixture of multiple words, numbers, and characters, to create unguessable complex passwords.

Also, it may be a pain, but using the same password for every account is one of the quickest ways for hackers to access your sensitive information, so make each one unique.

You could keep them in a safe, secure location in your home, or use a password management app, like 1Password or LastPass, to keep them in a secure digital environment.

2. Look for the padlock

Whenever you’re offering your personal information online, whether setting up an account or making payments, make sure to check for a padlock in the address bar of your browser, or the URL starting with ‘https’ proving the site is secure to modern standards.

3. Be careful with your Cookies

Cookies aren’t always sweet treats companies save cookies on your devices whenever you visit their website. You may also have seen pop-ups asking if you consent to cookies, so if you don’t want a business knowing about you, make sure to deny all the permissions.

4. Consider using a VPN

A Virtual Private Network, or VPN for short, encrypts your internet connection and hides your IP address, making it really hard for any snoopers to track your online activity and view your personal data.

This is especially important if you’re ever using a public Wi-Fi network, like at a cafe or airport, preventing the internet provider from collecting and selling your data (unless you have to give it to access the service in the first place).

5. Keep retail accounts private

Social Media and gaming services may ask you to connect your retail accounts for rewards. While this may seem positive, you’re potentially providing all that information within those accounts to other parties that may sell it or use it to send more targeted advertising.

20,000 customers across the UK are now part of the gigafast-capable Full Fibre broadband network, Zzoomm.

This latest milestone is another positive step in a year that has seen Zzoomm pass 150,000 ready for service properties in June, and now double it’s customers in 6-months.

Zzoomm is proving itself adept at driving strong market penetration, announcing a string of impressive achievements with 1-in-3 in Henley-on-Thames now connected and now with 23% of Sandhurst and Crowthorne.

Due to growing local demand, Zzoomm are also soon to complete a series of local network extensions across their UK footprint with the first coming from Henley-on-Thames into neighbouring Shiplake.

These strategic local expansions alongside new towns added to the Zzoomm network will see Zzoomm pass 200,000 properties by end of Q1 2024.

Matthew Hare, Chief Executive Officer of Zzoomm, commented:

Zzoomm is all about delivering a fabulous Full Fibre broadband service to happy customers.

We believe everyone should be able to rely on their broadband. Our gigabit-capable Full Fibre network is delivering just that to 20,000 customers across the country.

We’re still a young company with an average network age of less than 12 months so this is a huge achievement. Our plans are ambitious and we will achieve fabulous things in 2024 as we pass 200,000 ready for service homes and welcome the next 20,000 customers.

Back in the day, the quickest way for Christmas day to turn sour was when batteries weren’t included in that extra special present and Santa forgot to get some spares, just in case

These days, your internet connection is usually required to activate many top-tier presents, like games consoles, smart home devices, phones and tablets etc. and will likely be vital for them to perform their function too!

So, to stop Brussels sprouts flying and seasonal sibling skirmishes from disrupting your Christmas Day, check out the information below for suggestions to make sure your new devices are connecting at the fastest speeds possible.

Connectivity troubles come Christmas Day?

Try the points below for a quick fix, or keep reading for more detailed advice:

Turn the device off for a minute before trying to reconnect again

Do the same with your Zzoomm router

Try a wired connection, if possible, to connect the device to the internet

Check the user guide to make sure you’re using the right frequency (2.4 or 5 GHz)

Wired or Wi-Fi?

Many mobile devices, such as phones and tablets will only be able to connect to your home’s internet connection via Wi-Fi. But others, especially game consoles and Tower PCs, will benefit significantly from having a physical connection to your router, typically via an Ethernet cable.

For the gamers in your household to climb rankings and perform at their best, we’d recommend a wired connection because Ethernet-connected devices don’t suffer the same degradation that all Wi-Fi connections suffer from, such as thick walls getting in the way, as well as interference from other connected devices.

This means metrics such as lag, jitter, packet loss and ping (that can affect a game’s online performance) are better because there’s a more reliable connection back to the router.

It will also mean gamers will be able to download their games much faster, without affecting the connection speeds of other Wi-Fi devices on your home network!

Top Tech Tip 1

If your new device is too far away from your router to run an Ethernet cable, you could use the mains electrical circuitry in your home as a network. This is called Powerline Ethernet, which can be bought from a variety of retailers. However, they range in capability, and results can be mixed, so please consult the manufacturer’s guide for performance information.

2.4GHz or 5 GHz?

Depending on the device, it may use different Wi-Fi frequencies to connect to your router. If you’re using our newest Wi-Fi 6 router, the good news is you’ll be able to use both 2.4 and 5GHz frequencies, which can deliver a range of benefits.

2.4GHz usually provides more reliable coverage if there’s lots of interference, but while it is a commonly-used frequency, it delivers slower speeds than a 5Ghz signal.

5Ghz provides faster data rates over a shorter distance, and can juggle more devices at the same time, but is harder for the signal to get through walls or travel longer distances.

Top Tech Tip 2

You might find that the 5 GHz network from our router is labelled as FAST on your devices.

Older devices may only be able to connect to one or the other, while newer devices should be able to connect to either. This means that you can connect devices to the network that is best for them

If devices are far away from your router and don’t need the fastest connection possible e.g. Smart doorbells, CCTV etc. we’d recommend using the 2.4 GHz network. For streaming devices and consoles, we’d definitely recommend using 5 GHz.

Top Tech Tip 3

Don’t put your Zzoomm Hub behind a TV or by a fish tank. Metal objects scatter your signal, and Wi-Fi can’t swim, so water can significantly reduce how far your Wi-Fi can go!

For more device-specific support, check our handy table which gives general advice depending on the device in question:

Device

Common Issue

Resolution

Smart TV

Some TVs are limited to 2/4 GHz therefore FAST network doesn’t show.

Connect to the 2.4 GHz network or consider using an Ethernet cable if you’re still experiencing issues.

Laptop or PC

Slow downloads, and stuttering issues while gaming or streaming.

Connect to the FAST network if possible, or consider using an Ethernet cable if you’re still experiencing issues.

Xbox Series X and S

Slow Wi-Fi downloads or lag during gaming

Connect to the FAST network if possible, or consider using an Ethernet cable if you’re still experiencing issues.

PS4 and PS5 (all models)

Slow Wi-Fi downloads or lag during gaming

Connect to the FAST network if possible, or consider using an Ethernet cable if you’re still experiencing issues.

Nintendo Switch

Slow Wi-Fi downloads or lag during gaming

Connect to the FAST network if possible, or move the device closer to the router.

Mobile phones and tablets

Slow Wi-Fi downloads, extended buffering or jittery video calls

Make sure Wi-fi is on and connect to the FAST network for improved performance.

Smart Devices
(Amazon/Google Nest, Ring Doorbells, Smart Fridges etc.)

Possible disconnects or no Wi-Fi connection visible.

Connect the device to the 2.4 GHz network for stability/maximum signal strength.

20 October 2023. Zzoomm, the Full Fibre broadband provider have announced the connection of their first customer in Chapeltown (Sheffield), South Yorkshire.

Nicola, Zzoomm’s first resident to go live with Zzoomm said:

We have lived at our property for 6 years. We have been extremely limited with our internet constantly dropping out or not working at all. We have had numerous devices & Engineers from our current provider but unfortunately, problems persisted.

When I initially saw Zzoomm Engineers outside our property & went over to ask questions in the hope it may be Full Fibre being installed, I was delighted to hear I was correct. Hopefully, I will now be able to work from home more efficiently, be able to watch a film without having to turn it off in frustration of buffering and most of all, my son will now be able to play his PlayStation without being upset that it’s dropped out or constantly lagging through his football games.

Echoing the demand for better broadband in Chapeltown, Chris Collinson, Zzoomm’s Chief Commercial Officer said,

Welcome Nicola, we hope you and your family enjoy Zzoomming!

We’re delighted to have seen such a positive response from residents to our bold brand and we are already seeing many of them sign up to our excellent Full Fibre service.

We look forward to installing these new Zzoommers in the coming weeks and welcoming many more from Chapeltown as we progress the build.

The rollout in Chapeltown includes 11,000 premises and will be completed by March 2024, adding to Zzoomms growing network of Full Fibre towns across Yorkshire.
